What is Dynamic Tissue Systems (DTS)?
ABRA Dynamic Tissue Systems is an innovative wound closure technology designed to address retracted, unstable wounds by applying dynamic tension to bring wound edges together. Unlike traditional static devices, ABRA uses cyclic stretching to counteract retraction forces, promoting collagen remodeling, increased skin coverage, and natural tissue regeneration.
It is widely used by medical professionals for a variety of wound types, including acute injuries, chronic wounds, and surgical incisions. ABRA’s soft, flexible materials enhance patient comfort, reduce infection risk, and minimize scarring. Its easy application and removal make it a versatile and efficient solution for improving wound healing outcomes.
Key Benefits of Cyclical Stretching
Active Wound Closure
Unlike passive dressings, dynamic tissue systems apply continuous tension to bring wound edges together, promoting faster healing.
Promotes Natural Remodeling
Encourages collagen fiber rotation and constructive tissue remodeling, leading to better long-term skin integrity.
Adapts to Complex Wounds
Effective for challenging cases like open abdomens, high-tension surgical sites, and chronic non-healing wounds.
Minimizes Skin Damage
Reduces excessive tension on surrounding skin, lowering the risk of necrosis and additional tissue trauma.
Prevents Wound Retraction
Counters natural retraction forces that can delay closure, keeping wounds in an optimal healing position.
Enhances Functional Recovery
Supports tissue adaptation, leading to improved mobility and reduced complications in post-surgical patients.
The ABRA device is a game changer and the only device I trust for sequential closure of my most challenging open abdomens.

Your Questions, Answered

ABRA is a dynamic wound closure device used primarily for open abdomen management, staged abdominal closure, and high-tension wound sites where the fascia can't simply be pulled shut. Surgeons also use it off-label for fasciotomy wounds and select trauma cases where delayed primary closure is the goal.
-
NPWT manages fluid and reduces edema, but it doesn't actively pull the fascia together; it manages the wound. ABRA closes it. Surgeons who use both often start with NPWT for source control and bring in ABRA once they're ready to actively re-approximate the fascia over serial takebacks.
-
Yes, that's one of the more common searches we see, and it's a fair one. Because ABRA progressively closes the fascial defect rather than just covering it, a meaningful number of cases avoid the need for a skin graft or planned ventral hernia repair down the line, though the outcome depends heavily on wound size and time to first application.
-
Mechanical creep is the same principle behind tissue expanders. Tension components get adjusted at each dressing change, gradually recruiting native tissue instead of relying on a static suture line under load.
-
Yes. Fasciotomy wounds from compartment syndrome are one of the more frequent secondary applications, since the wound presents with the same core problem, a fascial gap that can't be closed primarily without excessive tension.
-
Sizing is based on wound length and expected defect width at first application, not final closure size. This is one we'd rather walk a first-time facility through directly than let someone eyeball off a size chart, since undersizing is the most common ordering mistake we see.
-
ABRA itself doesn't carry a standalone device HCPCS code, it's billed under the associated surgical closure procedure code, which varies by payer and by whether it's staged or single closure. Best to loop in your facility's coding team or ask us directly, since payer specifics vary.

Reach out through the request form on the ABRA product page or contact your Conduit rep directly. In-services are typically scheduled with OR leadership and run through application technique, sizing, and takeback protocol.
-
Standard shelf life, listed on the packaging and IFU. Room temperature, no special handling.
-
Conduit is the authorized distributor for ABRA in the territories we cover. Orders go through your Conduit account rep or the request form on our site; purchases are not routed through the manufacturer's site directly.

Beyond the published outcomes literature on dynamic wound closure systems, there's direct feedback from active surgeon users managing genuinely difficult open abdomen cases, sequential closures that would otherwise have ended in a planned hernia repair.
